TWO ENEMIES.
ONE GIRL STUCK IN THE MIDDLE.
THE MIDDLE IS A DANGEROUS PLACE TO BE.
_

Visit author Adelaide Thorne online to learn more about her thrilling sci-fi adventure trilogy about young Ella Kepler, a girl with unique abilities who has attracted the attention of Grifters, an underground race of creatures who want her dead for reasons unknown. Learning to embrace her new role as a fugitive of sorts while also living and fighting alongside the paramilitary training academy of the MTA, Ella struggles to stay afloat. But the battle has only just begun, for good can only win if every whitewashed lie is exposed, and not all revelations are bearable. Some truths are ugly. Some histories are better left unknown. And some secrets have the power to destroy.

In celebration of Adelaide’s book release of THE ANAMNESIS, enjoy this quick interview with the author. Thanks for your time, Adelaide! *hugs*

1) THE ANAMNESIS is the last book in the Whitewashed series, and you’ve said a few times on social media that you have mixed feelings on ending it. Do you have any plans for future short stories, novellas, or spin-off series? If not, give us hints on what you’re working on next!
You know, I’d always planned to write a “One Year Later” short story. It even has a title and a few scenes. However, I don’t feel that need anymore. The story feels complete, and anything after the fact might ruin that sense of resolution. If that makes sense. Besides, I’ve found that when authors put out additions to their stories, it feels like a cash grab or fan service, rather than an authentic continuation of the story. I’d hate to release something that comes across as disingenuous. If I think my story needs that “One Year Later” bonus, or if fans want it, I might. Otherwise, the only thing I’ll be putting out is a compiled anthology of my “Project Anamnesis” short stories, which have already been written and released. As to what I’m working on next, I’ll just say portals, magic, and kingdoms!

2) THE ANAMNESIS is said to feature several impressive new characters. Can you tell us a little about your favorites?
I mentioned in my IG stories that the character Emmett got a grip on my heart, but I can’t say too much about him, so another newbie is Dom Bist. He’s heavily involved in the *operation* Ella works with in this book, and he’s the quirkiest metahuman in the MTA. Most metas are stiff, formal, and robotic, so I had tons of fun writing a character who desperately wants to be normal (and thinks he’s achieved it when he 100% hasn’t).

I’ve only been yelled at by one reader so far… Fingers crossed that this book doesn’t instigate a horde of murdering fans.

3) You’ve also said before that making this book into what it is today really kicked your keister. What made it so much more difficult than those that came before?

With my previous books, I had the lifeline of “Oh, I can retcon this in the next book.” (Ha – not really. I tried not to retcon anything!) I knew that any dangling plot element could get resolved in the subsequent books. With The Anamnesis, I didn’t get that luxury. It’s like finding yourself at a marathon and realizing that it’s not a practice round but THE round. Plus, this book has the most emotional impact. Some serious topics get dragged into the spotlight. Even some dark topics, dare I say it. I was very concerned I’d mismanage those darker elements. At the same time, I didn’t want to go too dark. My tendency is toward sadness, pessimism, and cynicism (which I know you know, Baj!), and I very nearly wrote a tragedy. Honestly, it was only in the last few months before release that I realized my conclusion had a super depressing vibe, and I had to scramble to readjust the tone. Thank goodness I did, because I’m MUCH happier with the ending now. And I’m pretty sure my readers will be too. I’ve only been yelled at by one reader so far… Fingers crossed that this book doesn’t instigate a horde of murdering fans.

4) What can you tell us #Ethella fangirls about the fate of our OTP?
All I can tell you is…there may be a kiss.

5) Fun question: Whitewashed is all about meta-humans with supernatural powers. If you were a student at the Academy yourself, give us your profile rundown.
I’ve gone back and forth over this. Whenever I play video games, I always opt for the melee character because I lack the patience and accuracy to fight ranged. So I can safely assume I’d make a terrible animo (sniper). At the same time, I’m not a fan of throwing myself into danger like a ferio (hand-to-hand) fighter would, so that might make me a clavio (staff-wielder). But I don’t think I’m graceful or accurate enough for that, either, so… ferio it is. I’d have my nose broken a bunch.

ABOUT ADELAIDE

After her stick figure comic series “The Adventures of The Unstoppable” failed to garner any fans, Adelaide Thorne accepted that drawing would never be her superpower. She also accepted that she was not, after all, The Unstoppable. Twelve-year-old Adelaide never forgot the thrill of adventure, however, and the mystery of heroes, powers, and a bad guy who maybe is only bad because he feels stuck. Or maybe he’s just bad, and that’s interesting, too.

Adelaide’s writing has taken her around the worlds of her brain, and also around a lot of restaurants. After years of being the pickiest eater in the south, she somehow got a stint as a city blogger and food columnist, which taught her that people are too obsessed with queso and not excited enough about chicken noodle soup. She’s since said goodbye to journalistic writing and hello to creative writing, which is, after all, what she’s always done.

She currently lives in Florida, where she complains about the humidity but never makes any plans to move. Adelaide and her husband have two cats (only two), who are excellent sounding boards for ideas.
